Coming soon…

11:03:00 AM by Corey

i am currently working on moving my blog to my own website…  coreyrabinowitz.com.

also, with this post, i am testing windows live writer blogging tool.  it seems that it analyzes your blog, regardless if it’s hosted with live.com or not, figure out the layout, and is able to publish up to it.  very interesting…  might blog more often then if i don’t have to actually log in to blogger every time.

What's going on at the Sharper Image website?

12:43:00 PM by Corey

Everyone enjoys playing with the fun gadgets and toys at their local Sharper Image. When I was following a link over to them today, this is what you are greeted to. The only link is at the bottom there in small print "For More Information" and that is an email link to info@sharperimage.com.
Anyone heard any rumors or have speculation of what it could be?

*Update*- i just read that this has been on their site since mid june 08...

I found out about this website... it basically tells you if a website is down or if it's something on your end.

Watch TV online

Top Picks

TV-Links (no longer online) - extremely popular, comprehensive and always up-to-date video directory. Additionally to ‘TV shows’ also features ‘Cartoons’, ‘Anime’, ‘Movies’, ‘Music videos’ and ‘Sport’ categories. Outperforms other similar services in several ways: huge number of shows, lots of good video quality shows, few broken links, full-screen mode and more.

Alluc - Very similar to above mentioned TVLinks. Lists TV shows, cartoons, anime, movies, music videos, sport videos and documentaries.

Sidereel - Wiki-style directory with lots movies and TV shows. In addition to listing links to full-length web videos also lists destinations where you can buy related shows/movies.

Other ‘Live Streaming’ Services

  • TV-Video - TV shows
  • AllOfTV - anime, cartoons, music videos, TV shows.
  • VideoHybrid - movies, TV shows.
  • Peekvid - TV shows, cartoons, anime, movies, music videos and some more

Bonus: Custom Search Engine

MOVIES and TV SHOWS Search (Google Co-op): similar to what was done for ‘Q&A’‘HowTo’ services, this custom google-powered search engine lets you search simultaneously on all ‘free-to-stream’ Movie and TV Shows sources.

Firefox

11:02:00 AM by Corey

i personally use firefox on my home and work pc’s. To me, it’s the most robust browser, with its advantage being the enormous collection of addons (extensions as they were called prior to Firefox 2.0) available for it.

here is a collection of addons that i use on every firefox installation i have and the link to get them:

Gmail Notifier: icon defaults in the lower right corner of the browser and a popup will notify you when you have a new Gmail.

Image Zoom: adds new entries to the mouse right click over an image to give you zoom in/out/fit to page/custom zoom… if you hold the right click down and use the scroll wheel on the mouse, the image will dynamically zoom in and out.

IE Tab: allows you to use the Internet Explorer rendering engine in firefox instead of the firefox engine. This helps quite often since many websites are created optimized for IE. Right click on the website page or on the tab and there is a choice to switch over.

OpenSearchFox: This allows you to create your own search engine in Firefox’s built in search field. You right click on any search box on any website and choose “Add OpenSearch plugin” and it will give you the choice to name it and an associated icon.

StumbleUpon: Adds a toolbar to your browser (which i’m not usually in favor of) that when you configure it to what interests you (various topics covering mostly anything you can think of) lets you find new websites based on those topics. Then you can rate the website either you like it or don’t like it, and this tells StumbleUpon how to give you future websites when you click the stumble button. This also can be added to Internet Explorer, not just Firefox

Stylish/Greasemonkey: These are two separate addons actually that do a very similar effect. You can change the look or functionality of specific websites, the browser itself, or some affect all websites. There are literally hundreds (maybe thousands?) of scripts available. Some random examples of scripts are:

  • Change Ebay to show a different time zone other than Pacific
  • Make all Google pages use the same font
  • Remove the custom ads in Gmail
  • Hide all comments in Youtube

Comment with your favorite extensions (or scripts)…

Gmail Filtering

Did you know the periods in your gmail address don’t mean a thing? That’s right, if you signed up as geek.sugar@gmail.com, you’d still get emails sent to geeksugar@gmail.com. You’ll even get emails sent to g.e.e.k.s.u.g.a.r@gmail.com, for the wiseacres in your family. Ooh, and anything sent to “googlemail” instead of “gmail.” Honestly, it’s the little things that blow my mind (and btw, none of the above email addresses belong to us!).

More usefully, you can add a plus sign to the end of your address, and then you can set up a folders in your email that coordinate with that. For instance, say you open an online account with WellsFargo. When you sign up, give your email address as “geeksugar+banking@gmail.com”, then in Settings, set up a filter. In the From box, add in WellsFargo or your chosen bank, in the To box, put in your newly-created geeksugar+banking@gmail.com address, and the set the filter to put in a folder titled “banking.” You can also use this technique when you sign up for something and send their emails to you directly to the trash!
